This wine is a blockbuster! It is a huge, intense wine, deep and dark, the selection of various vineyards and the high use of French oak barriques giving the wine a suppleness and softness and unique character. This is a wine for cellaring; as it ages, the wine will mature and the Sangiovese fruit character will change. This is the biggest wine that we have made.

Similar to the 1998 vintage at Riecine, the 2001 growing season progressed very well under almost ideal weather conditions. A small frost in the Spring reduced our quantities, but the long, hot and dry summer gave us good ripeness and great structure. The harvest commenced in late September and continued into the first week of October. Fermentation progressed normally over five days in our small-lot fermentation containers. After settling and gentle pressing, the wine was moved to oak barrels for aging. The final result of the 2001 vintage was excellent. This wine was made in a big, powerful style: we used 60 % new French oak to soften the tannins and to add deep, dark complexity. La Gioia is blended from various vineyard patches and different soil types. The final blend includes about 5% Merlot, lifting the aroma and adding a bit of richness.
