O Rufete s³ysza³em kiedy¶, cyt.: Rufete (also known as Tinta Pinheira) is a dark-skinned, late-ripening variety from northern Portugal, grown predominantly in the Douro, Dao and Beira Interior regions.
Across the border in the northwestern Spanish region of Castilla y Leon, Rufete it is used to make both red and rosé wines, notably in Arribes, where it plays a complementary role to the local favorite, Juan Garcia.
Once vinified, Rufete produces full-bodied wines with plummy flavors and savory earth tones. When it is not fully ripened, which can be a problem for the variety, minty aromas tend to pervade. Rufete has ample tannins and good acidity, ensuring the wines are able to mature for long periods.
Rufete is used mostly as a blending component, so opportunities to try single-variety Rufete are few and far between. Fortified wines are commonly produced from the variety in the Douro region.
